It usually arrives at the worst moment. You raise the camera to take a photo and the shutter will not fire. An iOS update refuses to install. A banner says iPhone Storage Full, and the suggestions underneath are all some version of delete things you would rather keep.
Most advice about this problem is unsatisfying because it treats the symptom. It tells you to clear caches, offload apps, or delete a few large videos, and you claw back a gigabyte or two that vanishes again within a fortnight.
The underlying situation is almost always simpler than it looks. On a phone that has been in daily use for a couple of years, photos and video typically account for more of the storage than everything else combined. Apps, messages, and system files are rounding errors next to a camera roll. So the real question is not what can I delete? It is how do I get my photo library off this phone without losing it?

Why does my iPhone still say storage is full after I deleted photos?
Start here, because this one catches almost everybody and it costs nothing to fix.
When you delete a photo on an iPhone, it is not deleted. iOS moves it to a Recently Deleted album, where it sits for 30 days before being removed for good. During those 30 days it occupies exactly the same space it did before you deleted it.
So the familiar experience — spending twenty minutes deleting hundreds of photos, then watching the storage bar refuse to move — is not a bug. Nothing has actually been freed yet.
To reclaim it now:
- Open Photos
- Go to Albums and scroll to the bottom
- Tap Recently Deleted (you may be asked for Face ID or your passcode)

People who have been deleting photos for weeks sometimes recover 10 GB or more from this step alone. It is worth doing before anything else, if only so that every measurement after it is honest.
Android has the same pattern with different numbers: Google Photos keeps deleted items in a trash for 60 days, and the Files app keeps its own separate bin.
What is actually filling up your iPhone?
Do not guess. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage and wait a few seconds for the bar chart to populate.
You will get a colour-coded breakdown with a list of apps beneath it, sorted by size. What matters is the Photos row. On most phones that have not been cleaned out, it is the largest single item by a wide margin, and it is frequently larger than every app on the phone put together.
The reason is video. Still photos are relatively cheap — a HEIC image from a recent iPhone is a few megabytes. Video is in another category entirely. A single minute of 4K footage at 60 frames per second runs to several hundred megabytes, and ProRes can exceed a gigabyte per minute. A handful of birthday parties and a school concert, recorded at the quality your phone defaults to, will quietly consume more space than your entire app library.
This is why the advice to delete apps rarely helps much. Removing a 200 MB app to make room for a 3 GB video collection is not a strategy.
A note on System Data (older iOS versions called it "Other"): it covers caches, logs, streaming buffers, and temporary files that do not belong to any one app. It swells after heavy streaming or a big update, and iOS shrinks it on its own when space gets tight. There is no supported way to clear it directly, and chasing it is usually wasted effort. Measure your Photos row first.
Does "Optimize iPhone Storage" actually free up space?
Yes — with a catch that matters.
Found under Settings → Photos, Optimize iPhone Storage replaces the full-resolution files on your device with smaller, screen-sized versions, keeping the originals in iCloud and downloading them again when you need them. It genuinely reduces local storage use, often dramatically, and for many people it is the single most effective built-in setting.
Two things to understand before you rely on it.
It requires iCloud Photos, and iCloud space. The originals have to go somewhere. Apple's free tier is 5 GB, which will not hold a real photo library, so in practice this means a paid iCloud+ plan sized to your library — an ongoing cost that grows as you shoot more.
Afterwards, your only full-quality copy is on Apple's servers. Your phone is holding compressed previews. That is fine as a storage strategy and poor as a safety strategy, because iCloud Photos syncs your library rather than archiving it — delete a photo on your phone and it is removed from iCloud and from every other device on your Apple Account. Optimize Storage is a good answer to "my phone is full." It is not an answer to "what happens if I lose these?"
One related quirk worth knowing: with Optimize Storage on, apps that try to read your photos may find placeholders rather than originals, and have to pull the full files from iCloud first. If you have ever seen photos marked as "iCloud only" or skipped during a transfer, this is usually why.
Why offloading apps barely moves the needle
Settings → General → iPhone Storage will offer to offload unused apps, removing the app itself while keeping its documents and data so a reinstall picks up where you left off.
It is a reasonable feature and it is not where your space went. Unless you have a large collection of games, the entire app list is typically a small fraction of what the camera roll occupies. Offloading twenty apps might buy you a few gigabytes; your video library is holding fifty.
Two exceptions are worth checking, because both can be surprisingly large:
- Messages — years of photos and videos received in chats. Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Messages shows the breakdown, and you can review large attachments there.
- Podcasts, Music, and video apps — downloaded episodes and offline titles accumulate silently. Streaming apps in particular can hold many gigabytes of cached downloads.
So what actually frees up space for good?
Move your photos and videos off the phone, confirm the copy is real, then delete the originals. Everything else is a temporary reprieve.
There are three honest ways to do the first part, and which suits you depends on what you already own.
Copy to a computer. Free if you have one. On a Mac, the Photos app or Image Capture will import; on Windows, the phone appears in File Explorer and you can drag files off directly. It works, it costs nothing, and it needs a computer, a cable, and enough free disk space on that machine — which is often the same problem one step removed.
Buy more cloud storage. The path of least resistance. iCloud+ scales up in tiers, and with Optimize Storage enabled your phone stays comfortable indefinitely. You are renting the space, the cost recurs forever, and it grows as your library does.
Copy to a USB drive or portable SSD. A one-time hardware cost, no computer required, and no account involved. The drive is yours, it works with no internet connection, and a 1 TB SSD costs roughly what a couple of years of mid-tier cloud storage does. The trade-off is that it is a physical object you have to keep track of and remember to plug in.
These are not mutually exclusive, and the most robust setup uses more than one. But if your phone is full right now and you do not want to pay a subscription to fix it, the drive is the most direct route.
How do you move photos from an iPhone to a USB drive?
Since iOS 13, the Files app has been able to read and write external drives, so this no longer requires a computer in the middle.
What you need:
- An iPhone 15 or later connects to a USB-C drive directly. Older models need a Lightning to USB adapter.
- The drive should be formatted exFAT for the best compatibility across iOS, Windows, and macOS. iOS can also read APFS, HFS+, and FAT32, but exFAT handles large files and moves between machines most cleanly.
- If the drive is a spinning hard disk or a high-power SSD, use a powered hub. A phone supplies limited power over its port, and an underpowered drive will mount and then disconnect partway through a transfer.
The built-in route. Open Photos, select the items you want, tap Share, choose Save to Files, and pick the drive. This is free and it works. Its limits show up at scale: you are selecting manually, there is no record of what you already copied, an interrupted transfer starts over, and Live Photos may be split into a separate still and video file rather than staying paired.
The dedicated route. How do you delete safely once the copy exists?
This is the step people rush, and it is the only one that is genuinely unforgiving. Take it slowly.
1. Verify the copy before you delete anything. Compare the file count and total size on the drive against what the phone reported. They will not match exactly — formats and folder overhead differ — but they should be close. A large shortfall means the transfer did not finish.
2. Open files directly from the drive. Not thumbnails — actually open them. Check several, and deliberately include a video and a Live Photo, since those are the two that most often arrive broken or split. Confirm they play, and that they are not zero-byte placeholders.
3. Eject the drive properly. In the Files app, tap the eject symbol next to the drive before unplugging. Pulling a drive mid-write is a reliable way to corrupt a directory you just spent an hour filling.
4. Now delete from the phone — and empty Recently Deleted afterwards, or you will have freed nothing.
One warning before you start deleting. If iCloud Photos is turned on, deleting a photo on your phone removes it from iCloud and from every other device signed into that Apple Account. That is the intended behaviour of a sync service, and it is exactly why step 1 is not optional. Your drive copy has to be real and verified before the phone copy goes, because once you delete, the only copy left is the one you made.
If you would rather keep the safety net while you free up space, a middle path works well: copy everything to the drive, then turn on Optimize iPhone Storage instead of deleting. You get the local space back, iCloud holds the working library, and the drive holds the independent copy that survives a mistake.
What about Android?
The same logic applies, with different menus.
Check Settings → Storage (or Settings → Device care → Storage on Samsung devices) for the breakdown. Android phones with USB-C connect directly to a drive, and file managers handle the copy.
One thing worth checking on Android specifically: WhatsApp media. Years of received photos, videos, and voice notes accumulate in a folder most people never look at, and on heavy-messaging phones it is frequently the single largest consumer of space after the camera roll — tens of gigabytes is common. It is also the easiest large win, because most of it is content you have already seen and do not need on the device. Look at the Photos row in Settings → General → iPhone Storage. That number is what is genuinely in play, and on a well-used phone it is commonly somewhere between 40 GB and 120 GB.
Not all of it will come back, because you will want some of it to stay on the device. But the gap between "my phone is full" and "my phone has 60 GB free" is almost always sitting in that one row, and it moves the moment the library has somewhere else to live.
The sequence that works
- Empty Recently Deleted. Free, instant, and often a surprising amount.
- Measure before you act. Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Find your Photos row.
- Copy the library off the phone — to a computer, a drive, or a cloud plan you are willing to keep paying for.
- Verify the copy. Open real files from the destination, including a video and a Live Photo.
- Delete from the phone, then empty Recently Deleted again.
- Decide on a routine. The phone will fill up again. An incremental copy every few weeks takes minutes; a rescue operation every two years takes an afternoon.
