Does your phone support USB OTG?

Everything here depends on USB OTG (On-The-Go), the standard that lets a phone act as a host and read a connected drive rather than behaving as a device itself.

Nearly every Android phone made in the past decade supports it, and any phone with a USB-C port almost certainly does. A small number of budget devices omit it.

The fastest way to find out is simply to plug a drive in. If OTG is working you will normally get a notification, or the drive will appear in your file manager within a few seconds.

If nothing happens, suspect the adapter before the phone. A charge-only USB-C cable or adapter will not carry data, and these are visually identical to ones that do. Using a known-good OTG adapter is the single most useful troubleshooting step.

What you need

The connection. A USB-C flash drive or SSD plugs directly into any modern Android phone. A standard USB-A drive needs a USB-C OTG adapter, which costs very little. Older phones with micro-USB ports need a micro-USB OTG adapter instead.

The drive. Any standard USB drive works. A flash drive is fine for a few thousand photos; a portable SSD is faster and more durable for a full library and for repeat backups.

Power. Phones supply limited power over their port. Flash drives and small bus-powered SSDs are usually fine, but a portable hard disk with spinning platters may draw more than the phone can provide, mount briefly, then disconnect partway through a copy. If transfers keep dying at unpredictable points, use a powered USB hub or a drive with its own power supply.

Format the drive exFAT. This matters more than it sounds:

The FAT32 limit is the one that catches people. Most flash drives ship formatted FAT32, photos are comfortably under the ceiling, and everything appears to work — until a long 4K recording refuses to copy. The drive is not full and the file is not damaged; the format simply cannot represent a file that size.

Where are your photos actually stored on Android?

This is the part with no iPhone equivalent, and getting it right is the difference between a complete backup and a partial one. Open your file manager and look in internal storage:

  • DCIM/Camera — photos and videos from the camera app. This is the main one, and on most phones it is the largest.
  • Pictures/Screenshots or DCIM/Screenshots — screenshots, depending on manufacturer.
  • Pictures — images saved by other apps, and often edited copies.
  • Movies — video from apps other than the camera.
  • Download — anything saved from a browser or received as a file.
  • Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media — WhatsApp photos, videos, and voice notes on Android 11 and later. On older versions this is a top-level WhatsApp/Media folder instead.

Manufacturers vary. Samsung, Xiaomi, and others sometimes add their own directories for camera modes, screen recordings, or dual-camera output, so it is worth scrolling through internal storage once rather than assuming.

A useful sanity check: if DCIM/Camera accounts for far less than the Photos figure your phone reports under Settings → Storage, your library is spread across more folders than you have found.

Method 1: Your phone's file manager

Every Android phone ships with a file manager — Files by Google on Pixel and stock-Android devices, My Files on Samsung, and a manufacturer equivalent elsewhere. Any of them can do this.

  1. Connect the drive and wait for it to appear. In Files by Google it shows under Browse; in Samsung My Files it appears as USB storage.
  2. Open Internal storage and navigate to the folder you want, starting with DCIM/Camera.
  3. Select the folder, or open it and select all files inside it.
  4. Choose Copy (not Move — leave the originals until you have verified the copy).
  5. Navigate to the USB drive, create a folder if you want, and Paste.
  6. Repeat for each of the other media folders listed above.
  7. When it finishes, eject the drive from the notification shade or the file manager before unplugging.

Copy, not move. This deserves its own line. Move deletes the original as it goes, so an interrupted move can leave files on neither the phone nor the drive. Copy first, verify, then delete.

Where this gets tedious. It works and costs nothing, but you are doing the bookkeeping yourself. You have to visit every folder, remember which ones you covered, and repeat the whole thing next time with no record of what was already copied. Large copies through a file manager also tend to restart from the beginning if interrupted.

Method 2: A dedicated backup app

An app that enumerates your media directly avoids the folder-hunting problem, because it knows where everything lives and tracks what has already been copied.

What about WhatsApp media?

On a phone that has been in daily use for a few years, this is frequently the largest single consumer of storage after the camera roll, and tens of gigabytes is common.

The reason is that WhatsApp saves every photo, video, and voice note you receive to local storage by default. Group chats accelerate this considerably — every meme, forwarded video, and photo from every group lands on your phone and stays there.

It is also the easiest large win available, because most of it is content you have already seen and have no reason to keep on the device. Copy the folder to the drive, confirm it arrived, and then clear it from the phone.

Two things to know. Media you delete locally stays available to re-download from the chat for a period, but not indefinitely, so treat the copy on the drive as the real one. And if you have WhatsApp's own Google Drive backup enabled, that is a chat-history backup tied to your account — useful for restoring WhatsApp itself, not the same thing as holding the media as ordinary files.

Why do backed-up photos show today's date?

This one alarms people, and it is worth understanding rather than worrying about.

When any app copies a file to a USB drive on Android, Android sets the file's filesystem timestamp to the time of the copy, and gives apps no reliable way to override it. So a file manager listing the drive may show today's date against a photo taken three years ago.

The photo itself is unchanged. The original capture date, camera model, and GPS coordinates live in the file's EXIF data, inside the file, and a byte-for-byte copy preserves all of it. Photo applications read EXIF rather than the filesystem timestamp, so your library will still sort and map correctly when you open it on a computer.

To confirm for yourself, open a copied file on a computer and check its properties or details — the capture date shown there is the real one.

This is a limitation of how Android writes to external drives, not a sign that something was lost.

How do you verify the backup?

Two minutes here is what turns a copy into a backup.

Compare the numbers. Check the file count and total size on the drive against the folders you copied. Small differences are normal; a large shortfall means the copy did not finish.

Open real files from the drive. Not thumbnails, which can render from cached previews even when the underlying file is broken. Open several, and include at least one long video, since those are most likely to have been truncated or blocked by a format limit.

Check EXIF on one file, as described above, to confirm metadata survived.

Eject before unplugging. Pull a drive mid-write and you can damage the directory you just spent an hour filling.

Only once that passes should you delete anything from the phone. And if Google Photos backup is switched on, remember that deleting a photo from the phone also removes it from your Google Photos library — items go to a trash for 60 days and are then gone. Troubleshooting

The drive does not appear. Try a different adapter first — charge-only cables are the most common cause. Then check power, since an underpowered drive can mount and vanish. Some file managers also need you to look under a separate USB or external storage entry rather than the main storage list.

The drive appears but nothing can be copied to it. It is almost certainly formatted NTFS, which most Android devices can read but not write. Reformat as exFAT.

A long video will not copy. The drive is FAT32, which cannot hold a single file over 4 GB. Reformat as exFAT.

Copies keep stopping partway. Power, usually. Use a powered hub or a self-powered drive.

You cannot open Android/data. Since Android 11, scoped storage blocks file managers from browsing that directory. Android/media, where WhatsApp keeps its media on modern versions, is still accessible — but app data stored under Android/data generally needs the app itself to export it.

The drive fills up faster than expected. Check whether you are copying original files or something has been re-encoding along the way, and confirm you are not copying the same folders twice under different names.

Would an SD card work instead?

If your phone has a microSD slot — many mid-range Android phones still do, though most flagships have dropped them — a card is a reasonable option, and the copy works exactly the same way.

The caveat is that a card sitting inside the phone shares the phone's fate. Dropped in water, lost, or stolen, and both copies go together. As an overflow for storage it is useful. As a backup it only counts if the card comes out and lives somewhere else.

Cards of 64 GB and larger normally ship formatted exFAT already, which is what you want.
